Markdown to EPUB, explained
Package your Markdown as an EPUB 3 e-book for Apple Books, Kobo and Calibre, or for Kindle through Send to Kindle, which accepts EPUB files.
What is converted, and how
- Chapters
- Each top-level
#heading starts a new chapter. - Table of contents
- Generated from your headings, so readers can jump between chapters.
- Front matter
- YAML
title, author, dateandlangbecome book metadata and a title page. Without a title, the file name is used. - Footnotes
- Become linked notes.
- Code, tables and lists
- Kept, with a simple stylesheet the reading app can adapt.
Limitations
- No cover image, and images are only included when embedded as
data:URIs. - Reading apps decide fonts and page size; wide tables and long code lines may scroll or wrap.
Tips
- Start with front matter like
title: My Book, author: Jane Doeandlang: enbetween two---lines. - Run the file through EPUBCheck before you submit it to a store.
